Going Live

Until now only 4 or 5 people have known about this web address. Those 4 or 5 people just happened to be absolutely random picks - they were friends who happened to be communicating with us in the first couple of days of starting Travels In Our Jeans.
Well, I have already freaked out once, thinking I had a web stalker after only 5 days. Aaron who I joined the Army with 20 years ago, told me he hadn't seen the web site but then a name similar to his came up from a chronologically earlier post with some very cutting remarks about how the poster saw our trip panning out. Whilst it sounded like his humour, because of the time on the post I knew it couldn't be so I immediately locked the web site down and required comments to be vetted by me before appearing on the web - then I discovered, 1 day later, that at that point the time was a USA region whereas I had assumed GMT. The post was from Aaron and in that context was very amusing. Of course he has tamed his comments down now and probably won't dare come back! The time on comments is now Australian Eastern Standard.
Anyway, the time has come to tell the world. So WELCOME!! It is still very much a work in progress but a usable work in progress and hopefully a little informative so far.
Soon we will be linked to our own donations page through CMRI and their page at Every Day Hero. We are going to add to our Home page and explain how we hope that people might like to donate to CMRI by sponsoring us, kind of like a Travel-A-Thon. We expect to visit about 40 countries, cross 50 international borders and cover tens of thousands of kilometres so there is plenty of scope for people to add encouragement to us and at the same time help out with CMRI.

Toys and Chores

As we are heading away for a year we have had to come up with alternate plans for our dog, Mojo. He was originally going to go to my Mum and Da's place in Mollymook, 40 minutes from our house. Unfortunately my Dad passed away in June so we have adjusted plans a little. Mum is feeling more confident driving and seems keen to get out of the house so she is going to move into our place and spoil Mojo in his own backyard. As a scatterbrained Staffy X with seriously bad separation anxiety Mojo needs all of the stability he can get!
In addition, we decided to sell one of my motorbikes, our car and our trailer so they have been advertised at work and so far all has been smooth - bike gone, trailer sold, awaiting delivery by me and the car has some interest. As we are using the car (Ruby) to get us to Darwin she is only available in late January. I am putting a nice price on her to encourage interest and ease the stress when we get to Darwin as we want to leave Australia without any loose ends trailing behind!
Other little jobs seem to occupy most of my waking thoughts but I find the best way to get through them is to write lists! Once it is on paper, the little jobs can be thought about, ignored, come back to and eventually ticked off.
A lot of shopping was to occur last weekend, the plan was to secure bags, camera, video camera and a new lap-top. In the end we got the lap top and a video camera, both way cheaper than we expected. Still short of lots of accessories I expect but as we are travelling light we will probably remain minimalists and purchase things on the road.
Whilst we have camera's I want to get something a step or two above the current compacts. That probably means a Canon G11 but may end up being an entry level D-SLR.
Very impressed with the lap top we got and I will dedicate some extra space on the about us page to summarise our intentions regarding luggage and electronic accessories.

Slowly Coming Together

A couple of comments from friends is a great incentive for getting on with this side of the show. Thankyou. Meanwhile, a lot of little things are coming together. We are travelling with basically day packs so the main items of concern are passports, cameras and plastic cards to magic up local currencies with.
We will leave Darwin in late January so the initial planning is getting to Darwin.
The biggest worry for this leg of the journey is the time of the year. Summer in Australia can be extreme, and most of the places along our route experience days of 40+ degrees celsius a few times each year. There are two aims to our Australian leg: see friends; and actually enjoy some of Australia's beauty. We travel a lot in the car but so often we find that we are chained to the idea of needing to reach the destination, passing some of the real character of Australia without stopping in. We'll take almost 4 weeks to get to Darwin, pass through the red centre and cover about 7,000km.

First Post - Getting On The Net

Well, we don't know what we are doing but we do know where we are going - around the world! The plan is to set foot in 5 continents that we don't live in. We will start here in Australia and ensure Molly has seen enough of our own famous sites to be able to tell a good yarn around a camp fire at night, regardless of where we are. Can't have her being upstaged in Paris with some bloomin' Pom telling Uluru stories can we!
The start is more about what we are doing to prepare and what is easy, hard, frustrating and enjoyable about planning such a trip.

Firstly, Weebly is awesome!!! I was told about it today after weeks of researching web design, domain hosts and blog pages. In only minutes I knew this was for us. So far so good. It is what we wanted, it is what they say it is and we are really impressed by the end product, albeit just two pages so far! An unsponsored plug directed at anyone who reads this who ever wanted their own website - go out and do it with Weebly!
