Singapore!

What should have been a gentle start to the Asian leg of our journey kicked off with an accommodation cancellation that left us a little curious as to what we would be doing for this first week. Of course we eased into the crisis with dinner on the Singapore River at Boat Quay but when the bill came we realised that our future meals would be pot noodles in the room with beer brought in from 7-11 if we didn't get out of the city area!!
We eyed off Indonesian based Singapore resorts but Visas and other restrictions made that a no go. We then thought about going across to Malaysia earlier than expected but the Island we had in mind was renovating until mid-February so we asked friends nicely and here we are in luxury, staying with old friends again!
Chrystel and Bruno are wonderful hosts, accommodating us and our arrogant knowledge of only one language despite that fact that they are cultured natives of France. Having previously lived in the same Condominium as them in Malaysia their two boys and Molly had distant memories of each other and after half an hour were again familiar with each other. We were able to have kids on shoulders wrestling in the pool again after a 4 year lay off!!
Singapore has been great - and a totally different experience from when we have been before. Whilst our accommodation is nice it is in a fairly normal Singaporean suburb with lots of high rise accommodation supported at their bases by small hawker centres. The meals are excellent and varied but we have already noticed a big difference in pricing amongst them. Overall though they are great value and today was a treat with me having Chinese Pork curry accompanied by rice, beans and chilli for only $2.
Tomorrow will be our triumphant return to Singapore Zoo, having chalked up 15 - 20 visits each when we lived in Malaysia 5 years ago. We can't remeber our favourite parts of the Zoo but do remember it is a great day out and we plan on wearing swimmers to cool down at lunch.
